Details
This session encompasses new research to address the challenges facing each life stage of the pig as a production animal. Starting off in the farrowing house, we will look at how pen hygiene and creep feeding effect piglet feed intake and growth. Moving through to the nursery, we will hear a variety of talks on topics such as ear necrosis, sex effects on the microbiota and the effect of removing zinc-oxide on blood chemistry. We will learn how amino acid levels in the diet effect the behaviour and performance of commercial pigs and investigate the interaction between stocking level and enrichment material on performance. Finally, we will explore the ammonia emissions from finishing pigs in fully slatted systems. Research presented in this session will provide important data as we move towards a sustainable farming future.
