Charting the Future of Fashion: Identifying Transformative Education Approaches
Abstract
A roundtable forum is proposed where scholars brainstorm and share innovative educational approaches assisting the shift of the fashion industry toward a circular, regenerative system. The urgent need for change in the global fashion industry requires cooperation among scholars, sharing best practices and disseminating research findings to students who represent the next generation of fashion professionals. These students will play a key role in shaping a sustainable economy in the future.
First, session organizers introduce key sustainability challenges and identify several industry initiatives helping to shape a circular fashion economy. Next, symposium participants are split into groups of five to six scholars to brainstorm educators’ role in advancing change within the fashion discipline and industry. A moderator uses strategic questioning to guide discussion. Scholars will identify the most urgent disruptions confronting the fashion industry, explore ways to deepen student understanding of these problems, inspire creative solutions, and strategies for assisting fashion brands in meeting sustainability or circularity goals. The remaining time will be used to share insights, look for commonalities and unique ideas. By sharing global perspectives represented by conference attendees we will gain a richer understanding regarding the power of transformative education for reimagining the fashion industry for circularity.
