Transforming Home Economics Teacher Education: Building a Shared Identity
Abstract
Internationally, Home Economics Teacher Education (HETE) confronts multiple shared challenges, especially related to the status of HETE programs. Over the course of 12 months (March 2023-February 2024), 12 HETE colleagues convened to outline the status of HETE in each of the nine countries represented, to identify the shared concerns and shared understandings for building a global HE identity through HETE. Discussions highlighted the 1) overall status of HE education (shortages, program closures, out-of-field teaching, and curriculum concerns); 2) overview of HETE (content, pedagogy/andragogy, HE foundations, and relevancy); and 3) current efforts to address the multiple issues. What is understood is that while there remains unique qualities and needs of HETE specific to each nation, there emerges a clear conception of a shared HE professional identity, brought forth through HETE programs. This panel discussion will outline the findings of this collaboration and present a position statement articulating the value of HETE for its ability to generate an internationally shared HE professional identity.
