4.A Integrating Care in the Real World: How to Get Evidence and Policy Implemented in Practice
Monday, April 13, 2026
15:00 - 16:00
Hall 1 (Auditorium)
Overview
All over the world, lots of new policy and research calls for more integrated care, with new studies, pilots and programmes announced in an almost constant stream. However, IFIC members already know lots about what does and doesn’t work when it comes to integrated care – the trouble isn’t not enough policy or research, but not enough focus on putting what we already know into practice and making it a reality.
We also know that too many conferences focus on one-way presentations from the speaker to the audience, often running out of time for scope to interact and debate in a more two-way fashion.
Against this background, this parallel session focus on implementing knowledge in practice, in a more interactive format. Given the focus is on using existing knowledge to greater effect, we want to make sure that the session draws on the experience and expertise of participants, not just the panel.
Taking the form of a ‘high school debate’, we will start with a deliberately provocative statement:
‘This house believes that there’s no point doing more research on integrated care or issuing more policy, unless we also focus on getting existing evidence and policy implemented in practice’
We will then hold an initial vote to see what the audience thinks, before different panel members (very briefly) explain how their centre/organisation goes about getting evidence used in practice, drawing out the implications for future research, policy and practice.
This will be followed by a facilitated discussion, with questions from the floor and online – before a final vote to see if the session has changed the minds of those present.
Discussion will be facilitated by:
• Jon Glasby, University of Birmingham and Director of IMPACT (the UK centre for implementing evidence in adult social care)
• Paul Bird, Head of Programme Delivery, West Midlands Applied Research Collaboration
The broader panel will also include:
• Clenton Farquharson CBE, Think Local Act Personal and Trustee of Disability Rights UK and the Race Equality Foundation
• Mirella Minkman, Tilburg University and Chief Executive of Vilans, the Dutch Institute for Care and Support
• Michelle Nelson, Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation, University of Toronto and Vice President (SSO
