Continuous Traumatic Stress and Associated Trauma Disorders in Adolescents Around the World
Symposium Outline
The symposium aims to assess Continuous Traumatic Stress (CTS) and its consequences for adolescents (aged 10-24 years) facing ongoing threats and violence. Compared to single or multiple traumas, which are triggered by a specific traumatic event or a series of discrete traumatic incidents, continuous traumatic stress is a constant exposure to multiple traumatic situations that leads to prolonged physiological arousal, physical and mental exhaustion, and increased morbidity. In this symposium, CTS will be examined both as an exposure and as a response, associated with trauma-related mental health symptoms. Understanding adolescents’ personal and coping resources is crucial, as these factors predict their psychological responses to trauma. The symposium will highlight cross-cultural settings, examining how cultural factors shape adolescents’ responses to CTS and resilience. Studying the psychological impact of CTS in adolescents may have theoretical and practical implications for strengthening and maintaining mental health across the lifespan amid injustice, war, and violence.
