Cultural scripts of trauma - facilitating self-identification as trauma survivors

Symposium Outline

The cultural scripts of trauma theory proposes that reactions to traumatic experiences profoundly differ between cultures. It is also believed that these reactions are often shown as scripts, in which specific trauma reactions are linked with each other and form patterns associated with local cultural norms. A consortium of researchers is currently conducting a series of international studies to investigate such regional cultural scripts of trauma sequelae. This symposium will layout the network project in four presentations. The speakers will present relevant theories from cultural clinical psychology, introduce the aims and design of the intercultural network project as well as empirical results from the study sites in Switzerland, China, and Georgia. The findings illustrate the unique character of trauma reactions in different cultural contexts. Such knowledge opens new perspectives for a better facilitation of help-seeking behavior for treatment as well as the development of culturally sensitive approaches to trauma therapy.
