Overview
As Paediatric Otolaryngologists, we focus on providing patients with evidence based care bespoke to their individual needs. However, how often do we really understand the complexity of what a patient and family really wants and needs from their doctor?
This workshop aims to explore how we can better understand what patients and families want from their Paediatric Otolaryngologist. Key themes that will be explored include shared decision making, approaches for effective communication with children and families and ways to manage fear in children.
Our expert panel includes Dr Emily Boss who is a Professor of Otolaryngology, Paediatrics, and Health Policy & Management at the Johns Hopkins University Schools of Medicine and Bloomberg School of Public Health. She is a clinician scientist with research focused on patient and family-centred care, health disparities, and surgical outcomes and utilization.
Dr Doug Sidell is an Associate Professor of Otolaryngology at Stanford University in California, USA and Vice Chief of Staff at Stanford Children’s Hospital. He is director of the Stanford Aerodigestive and Airway Reconstruction Centre and the director of the Centre for Paediatric Voice and Swallowing Disorders.
Professor Bernie Carter is a Professor of Children's Nursing at Edge Hill University in the UK. Her work focuses on qualitative research about children's experiences of illness, disability and pain, as well as their experiences of healthcare services and how we can make services more child and family-friendly.
